Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/ 5-16-09

The last week here has been by far the best. Working 11+ hour days and waking up in the middle of the night thinking of things I have to remember to do the next day when I go in. Sounds exhausting (and it is) but I love more then anything that rush I get from being swamped with projects. The ELLA is on Monday and I'm so excited! My bosses even commented that I work better under pressure then any other person that has had this position with their organization. I have accomplished all my goals I had set for myself, and I look forward to enjoying the finished product.

Over all this experience has been up and down, stressful and fun. Bottom line I'm so happy I decided to take this opportunity. I have learned so much and gained so much from just four months here. I look forward to staying in contact with the people that brought me to the next step of my music career. Thanks for everything SOS!!!

Tyler Jones Rhino Week ??

Hello all,

I must say I have lost track of time and haven't posted for a bit and I apologize.. I feel horrible leaving you all in suspense.. I really don't remember if i did or not so here goes a update of the goings on.
It was 'fun' to have a day and a half off due to computer issues and not being able to do any work due to being denied access.. A mix up in paper work somewhere along the many trails that it takes, somehow had my internship ending 2 weeks early. Therefore my computer account login did not function. Frustrating but was fixable after many many calls to the "Helpdesk" aka outsourced IT department. Oh well life goes on.

I must say the last couple of weeks at Rhino were some of the best, and a bit sad.

My last 2 weeks as well as all my time at Rhino and WMG as a whole was amazing... Some great people work there. I would like to say that the releases have been doing very well an have been a blast to work on the Grassroots campaings for them. It was hard to walk out the doors on my last day.. I didn't want to leave, I still don't want to be done.

I didn't like it a first in L.A., I really liked Rhino, but it took me along time to adjust to what it is like in the city. It was busy, rude people, some really nice ones though. Traffic, nobody can drive or park a car apparently, they had a Valet at the bank. I laughed so hard when I saw that. It has grown on me quit a bit, not in my top 5 places to live but I can take it. I just head to a record store and all is right with the world.

UPDATE>>>>>>

The new Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath w/Dio) album I was able to do the Grassroots outreach for debuted at #8 on Billboard.. Tied for the highest for any Black Sabbath album.. YEAH!!!!!! Rock on!!!!

I also tallied and double checked all the past and current outreach to see if there was any site posting that I may have missed and I found a few and always get late ones that post a review or want to review a releaese a month after it has been out. As long as I can get some web presence for the release its all good..

I hope that everyone has enjoyed reading my blog and has gotten some helpful and enlightening info out of my semester at Rhino.. I would do it again in a hartbeat.. It helped to show me a side of the bussiness that is always behind the curtain. It has been an ammazing experience and a great amount of learning took place. I have alot to think about for my future plans and many tools to help implement them..

Thank you Rhino and the Carrer Center for all of this....

Take care and keep it snappy.

Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/ 5-10-09

Happy Mother's Day! Being in Los Angeles I can not be with my Mother today, however I called her to wish her the best of wishes on her special day. She is very happy for me though, being out here and coming closer to the end of my internship.

Speaking of, it has become a full fledged mad house at Society of Singers. And I Love It! With the event one week away from tomorrow, the pressure it on to make sure everything is in it's place and ready to go for the big show. With the phone ringing off the hook, fixing last minute details, calling to get names for guest lists, the days are flying by. I'm going to be staying later each day this week, just to make sure that the CEO and Director of Operations have less to worry about. And I can actually tell that they are already less stressed when I stay a step in front of them. I am very excited to see the end result and enjoy the 18th ELLA Award. A few people from the school, including Jack McNally himself, will be joining me at the ELLA Award to meet and greet with all of the other attendees.

On another note, my new roommate just arrived on Friday. He's a great guy who I feel is going to do great things with Alan Ett. Alan Ett is actually the man that got me my internship at SOS because he is on their Board of Directors. I look forward to meeting Alan as well at the ELLA.

Other then being extremely busy at work I have just been enjoying the California sun before I have to return back to Minnesota. Last week, WISH ME LUCK!

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 15

So I received a bit of good news this week. Jen (my mentor) said that next month they will be able to start paying me for working at the studio. Sadly, however, it won't be much money so I may need to find a part time job or something until the pay increases. But we'll cross that road when it happens and hey anything would help at this moment.

Last night I was able to get into the Sevendust / Dope concert at The Wiltern. Still spreading the word about Swing House, trying to recruit new clients, but always enjoying myself.

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 15

This marks the last week of my internship with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.  Working with SPCO has been a rewarding experience.  I have learned a lot about what is involved with running such a large organization.  There are many different facets that make the SPCO work so smoothly.  Learning how they work together is invaluable.

My internship started by meeting with the Public Relations Manager.  She and I set forth a plan for my internship.  My time was to be split between the marketing and education departments.  I found a niche for myself with the educational department.  I have a background as a music educator and enjoyed working with their programs.  Education is an important part of the SPCO and it is shown through their dedication to the community.  The rest of my time was spent with the marketing department.  Their Marketing is an efficient machine that runs smoothly because of the great communication within the department.

My experience with the SPCO was a success.  The tools that I will take away from there will aid me in my business and professional life.  Having the exposure to such a large organization was priceless.  I also enjoyed learning how a non-profit organization is run.  They go about business with a different strategy.  And, of course, being able to support and listen to a world class Chamber Orchestra was a great perk.

Minnesota Music Studios is the next project I am working on.  It is a music business that combines music lessons with recording technology.  With this, students are able to create play-along recordings that are custom fit their lesson plans.  At the end of their session, they will have recorded a portfolio of music similar to a professional demo.  The skills and strategies I've learned at The SPCO add a great value to my business and professional skills.  My time spent their was a tremendous experience.

Theodore Smith - Lorie Line Music - Week 13

Hey,

Well, I am a day away from graduation with only one final left. I also am a week out from the next show and less than a week in from the last... It feels pretty good to be this busy, even if I am sick (no, no no, it doesn't seem to be swine flu...) because I haven't been getting enough rest/food. I guess this is the end of my stay at McNally Smith College of Music. The time here I believe has been spent well and I would have called you a liar if you had said I would be touring before I even graduated. Who could have known and who does know whats in store for me next. I am approaching each day like that; wondering how I got where I am and where I will be later. Don't get me wrong, I'll stay with this gig for a while if I possibly can. But, I don't think that this is quite the end of the road for me yet. Thanks to my teachers, colleagues, friends, family and everyone else I've met I think I can say that I am beginning a successful career as an Audio Engineer.

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 14

This is week was full of educational projects.  I worked with the CONNECT program which is an outreach program that services 17 schools in the metro.  Three times a year we send an SPCO musician or ensembles to educate students about music and its history.  This week I put together informational packages that students will be receiving.  It was a lot of counting and packaging, but for a great cause.  Hopefully these students will be the next generation of musicians in our community.

The rest of the week was marketing meetings and tying up loose ends. Next week is my last with the SPCO.  My time here has gone very quickly.  It has been a wonderful experience full of great exposure to a large organization.

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 14

Things were not as hectic this week as last week. Everything and everyone settled back down after the events last week. We're still remembering just how important it is to protect our clients.

I was able to make it out to two differents shows to mingle and try to get new clients. I went to The Dreaming and Lunarclick on Thursday and then She Wants Revenge and War Tapes on Friday. I was able to make some new contacts and hopefully some will come in to practice soon. We'll see.

Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/4-22-09

Business is getting busy and I find myself not even considering it to be "school" work any longer. I feel that I have really made a place for myself there. I was asked to return next semester, however with no chance of turning this into a paid career I will have to return home to make a living for myself. But the offer is still on the table and I know I am welcome back any time (wonderful feeling). The ELLA is not less then one month away and it seems as though we have everything yet to do. I'm keeping things move along by keeping my "bosses" organized. I have realized that even the smallest of things do not go un-noticed there because it is so important that the ELLA runs as smooth as possible.
I received the gift bags from my school and they look wonderful (thanks Debbie)! Starting to collect more items for the raffle with every passing day. I have learned so much while working here I know believe that I could organize a successful fundraising event if I was ever asked to.
All for now but I'm sure I'll have much more to write about in the up coming weeks.

Theodore Smith - Lorie Line Music - Week 12

Well, it's now time to get ready for another Lorie Line tour. I will be leaving in under 5 hours and am contemplating on whether or not to even try sleeping... I'm not horribly nervous, I just know that getting is id going to be the closest thing to impossible I've had to do yet. I actually just finished my final project and had it mastered last night. It's insane to think that I started that project just over a week ago and don't even get a break before going on the road. I will be finishing my paperwork and finishing touches in between shows and at night after the shows. Basically on this tour, if I'm not loading/unloading, setting up/tearing down, or mixing; I will be working on my final project. I may allow myself a little time to actually see Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Reno and wherever we stop in our travels. Well, off to finish preparing and packing. Wish me luck!

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 13

This week was busy.  I was out of the office most of the week with a horrible cold.  This is a busy time of year for the SPCO.  There are many different types of offerings for single and group ticket sales being implemented.

Most of my work has been focused on Camp SPCO.  We are getting close to the sign-up deadline and are hoping that we meet our goal.  I have been contacting many of the participants from past years and there is a lot of excitement about this camp.  We hope to fulfill our goals with the camp and have a successful showing.  We have been working on the final details and logistics.  Next week should be interesting.  I can tell it will be the "make it or break it" for our planning.

Michael Powell, 4/20, Def Jam

Last week was the release of the Jadakiss album called 'The Last Kiss'. Allot of energy was focused on his project. Jadakiss had an album release party at the Highland ballroom, which was a big event. He landed number 1 on the charts after the first week.

I have been working a lot on the new videos coming out, making beta tapes and DVDs. I like doing this because I get to see the videos before they come out. A group called Players Circle has a video coming out called 'Stupid,' this is one of the videos I got a chance to see.

Recently I have been getting experience in photography. I am currently working on a portfolio so I can began taking pictures at different concerts for Def Jam Artists. This should be fun!

I'll keep everyone posted.

Joshua Stoll -Conway Studios- Week 13

It has been another slow week at Conway and we started another building project. I never though i would be learning construction while at Conway, but I am learning things that I would have to know if I was ever going to build a studio. This week we started building a porch outside Studio B and will continue on it tomorrow. There was one crazy day this week because there was as string section for a movie. Other then that the projects have been keeping us busy.

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 13

This week was very busy around the studio. We had a few bands come in to practice for the Cochella Festival happening this weekend.

However the beginning of the week was a little stressful for everyone involved. Certain information was leaked on the internet about a very private, new client. Information about their gear and the fact that they were practicing at Swing House was released on Monday on their fansite. Tuesday morning their manager contacted Phil (studio owner) to let him know that it was online. Luckily Phil figured out and knew exactly who released the information so it has since been removed and none of the current interns or employees were blamed over the situation. The studio has now gone even more on lockdown then it was before. It just reminded everyone just how confidential the business really is. And that we need to protect our clients to the max. It was a very great lesson.

Trevor Weitzel - Universal MPLS

Hi everyone.

It's been a quiet week here at Universal. Just the usual routine. I can't believe that I have only two weeks left of this internship and of school. It's gone by so quickly, but it has all been a great experience and I have learned a ton of great stuff.

I looks like Brian Montour will be taking over my position here next semester. I think I will be training him in next week so that the transition goes smoothly for my mentor. I've definitely spoiled her by being here two semesters.

I also wanted to thank everyone who came out to my listening party in the cafe on Monday. I had a pretty decent turnout. I definitely gave away a ton of free cds. Just one of the perks of the biz!

Till next week...

Theodore Smith - Lorie Line Music - Week 11

Well, just received the itinerary for the next tour. I leave Wednesday and come back Monday. I will be unable to assist with packing the truck due to class, but will be unpacking and packing it plenty with shows in Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, and Reno! Until then I will be finishing my final project!

Well, more next week!

Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/4-15-09

Today was the most busy I have been yet since I first started working for SOS. It is about one month now until the event takes place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We are getting all of the ads together to put in the book that all of the guests receive the evening of the event. I have also been receiving many more ticket purchases that are to be filed. Lots of busy work! Phone is off the hook lately and Friday I am selling Cd's and more tickets for the event at Catalina Island.

My roommate Paul, is leaving this weekend so we are hanging out in the evenings. I have really enjoyed living with him and might be moving in with him again when I return to MN. I could not have asked for a better roommate. He and I have gotten along very well and I met some of his friends that live out here. I sure am going to miss him.

Paul Marshall Warner Music Group Week 13

Most of my week revolved around the upcoming releases of the latest Heaven & Hell disc, their first release since 1992. H&H is Black Sabbath minus Ozzy, plus Dio. I created a pitch for this album & sent it out to hundreds of clients, hoping to get placements in TV, film, and trailers.

I'm also constantly updating a massive database of films in production for the creative department here at WMG. There are so many films out there. It's a bit ridiculous, but I've learned who the prominent supervisors are, who I need to meet,
and who I want to work with.

I went to the Epiphone Golden God awards at Club Nokia last week, thanks to WMG. Club Nokia is a great venue, and I saw some interesting acts and several celebrities.

It was a slow week for me, I had a friend come to town and only had a half week. I've only a little over a week left here, and I have several large things happening at WMG between now and the 23rd. I will keep you posted!!

Joshua Stoll -Conway Studios-

Well this week was another slow week at Conway. We ended up doing more construction in the studios. We ended up tearing out a wall in studio A and mounted a bunch of amps in the wall it took us about two days. I was kind of worried about the construction we have been doing the last two weeks, but in the end Buddy (the owner) was very happy with the out come. He demands perfection so seeing that he approved of our work was a great achievement. Other then that nothing new to report.

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 12

This week I was in New Orleans. It was a wonderful trip! I just spoke with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and it was business as usual this week. I'm excited to get back and finish the planning for Camp SPCO. There is still a lot to do and deadlines are approching fast. The next two weeks will be extremely busy.

Jesse Volk - Pangaea Entertainment Group - Week 13

Hello! I love you won't you tell me your name...?

I'm extremely excited this very Easter holiday as I am headed off to the Roxy to see my new favorite band La Roux! 80's style synth pop with sweet melodies....check 'em out!

As far as work is concerned....My guy Joe (the executer) asked me to do a little A&R work for him to help alleviate some of his grueling to-do list. I listened to and submitted my opinions for more than 15 bands and actually found a really cool new group called Yes Giantess. They make me just wanna dance and sing! Check 'em out on myspace...it's crazy sing-a-long electro pop party music for the college kid in you...

MUSEXPO! Only a couple weeks away! Crazy! Can't believe it's almost here and the internship is almost done...

adios muy mucho!

Your pal,
Jesse

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 12

Well for this week as far as the daily work at the studio, nothing too different happened. However I did go out to three different shows to try do to some promotions.

Last Sunday I went to see Puscifer with Sweethead @ Club Nokia. Puscifer is Maynard James Keenan's (Tool / A Perfect Circle) new project. And the show was even better then I expected. I got to meet Billy Howerdel (APC / Ashes Divide), Troy Van Leeuwen (APC / Queens Of The Stoneage / Sweethead), and Josh Freese (APC / Nine Inch Nails / Queens Of The Stone Age / etc...).

Then Wednesday I saw my friends in The Start open up for Julien-K @ The Roxy. This was probably my favorite show I went to this week. Plus during Julien-K's set Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) got up and did a couple songs with them. Then afterwards I got to talk to Ryan and Amir from Julien-K and I tried to convince them to practice at Swing House. I gave them my business card so we'll see what happens.

Finally last night I went to see Cold with The Killer and the Star @ The Whisky. I handed out some business cards and made some new possible clients and got to meet Cold again.

This has been a wonderful week.

Trevor Weitzel - Universal MPLS

Hey everyone.

Another week passes here at Universal. We just got done with our bi-weekly music meeting and got to hear some really great stuff. I'm really excited for this summer and the upcoming releases.

If you want to find our more about some of that new music, you should show up to the LISTENING PARTY I'm putting on in the CAFE on Monday, April 13th at 5 PM. I'll be showing music videos and playing to tracks from upcoming albums. Plus, you'll get to learn a little about my internship as well. And the best part... I'M GIVING OUT FREE CD'S TO THOSE THAT ATTEND.

Should be good times. I can't wait. Only 3 more weeks till I'm out of here!!!

Theodore Smith - Lorie Line Music - Week 9/10

Well hello to all,

Unfortunately, not too much has been happening on the Lorie Line side of everything for me. This is the lull before the storm (starting in a couple weeks it will be almost constant traveling and shows). However, everything else is extremely busy. I'm in the middle of the 4th semester project here at McNally Smith and also working there; plus, I'm doing a freelance work as well! So besides the three recording projects, work, freelance gigs, and school there isn't too much time left over for much besides sleeping.

Tyler Jones (Rhino) Week 11 & 12

Hello all,

Well as for week 10 (part 2 ) lets say that it never left pre-production. Nothing else really took place, the write got pulled to another project.

On to week 11, since I was busy and am still not always used to this blogging thing, unless I constantly write it down, I will will combine 2 weeks in one. Sort of like the double mint twins but not quite as cool or pretty.

It was a very good week I continued my outreach for The two Grateful Dead releases, as well as started working on preparing the copy for Genesis 1970 - 1975 (6 LP Vinyl Box) set we are releasing on Apr. 14th. This has been a great release to work on, as I am becoming obsessed with vinyl..

I would recommend for anyone that is interested in shopping for records and you are in, around or coming to L.A. for an internship.. It is required to go to www.amoeba.com and www.atomicrecords.com both are incredible. Rows and rows of used and new records..
I have a nice small collection going of some of my favorite bands.

On to more Rhino- with the Genesis, Grateful Dead and I almost forgot Erasure since the last two both came out today the 7th. get them at your local music store of amazon and iTunes.

Week 12 has been very good, mostly shipping out review and contest copies of Grateful Dead and Erasure. Continuing outreach for Genesis, and trying to keep up with my Twitter posting for www.twitter.com/Rhino_Ent and www.twitter.com/damnfineday . Check them out!!

I look forward to seeing what the new release that will end the month will be awesome. Genesis, Janes Addiction, and Heaven And Hell..

Will keep you posted and enjoy the awesomeness that is Rhino>>> www.Rhino.com

Keep it snappy and see you next week...

Mike Swoop-AEMG-Completion

Paul Marshall- Warner Music Group- Week 12

As my time here at WMG is coming to a close, I'm shadowing people around the office and learning each and every step in licensing a song, from the artist to the client. This week I shadowed a deal-maker. There are many steps in the deal-making process, and it was very interesting to see how they operate. She made the sometimes complicated process very organized and she can really turn & burn licensing deals!

We didn't have many big releases for me to discuss this blog. I spent a majority of the week working with the Flo Rida, Static X, Mastodon, Single File and Stevie Nicks releases. It wasn't a very busy week for me! I was also out sick for a couple of days...

WMG's transition to digital music delivery, instead of physical discs, will make next semester's intern very happy, and I'm hoping to be replaced by another McNally intern!

I have fallen in love with 3 WMG artists from Mali, Africa. Ali Farka Toure is an amazing desert blues guitarist, Toumani Diabate is an amazing kora player, and Amadou & Mariam is a pop-reggae group. I consider Amadou & Mariam to be the Michael Franti of Africa. I strongly suggest aquiring "Welcome To Mali" by Amadou & Mariam, and "In The Heart Of The Moon" by Ali Farka Toure & Toumani Diabate.

See you soon MN!

Jesse Volk - Pangaea Entertainment Group - Weeks 12?

good day, hello, and all and all...

I can't believe that we're in the stretch run now...seems like just yesterday.

Last week was much to do of the un-glamorous side of glamorous; rock and roll is dirty and always 24-7. It's a good lesson though for those McNallians coming out to fantastic LA for an internship; be ready to get your hands dirty and be ready to do the little stuff and remember that this IS the music business.

The next four weeks are going to be out of control for me and all of the staff as we are getting into the thick of MUSEXPO and working as many hours as it may take to make every thing is right and ready to go. It shall be fun!

peace

Jesse

Joshua Stoll - Conway Studios-

This last week at Conway was very slow. I ended up taking Monday and Tuesday off to engineer paid sessions at La Bren Studios in Inglewood. On Monday I mixed a instrumental track and on Tuesday we tracks some vocals. At Conway on Wednesday and Thursday there were no sessions books so we hung some new baffles up in studio C's piano room. That was quite a chore. But we all made it out alive so we called it a success.

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 11

This week offered me many new opportunities at Swing House. One of the opportunities is that we need to create a street team for the studio and that once it is in force I would be in charge of it. This would include going out to many different shows across the city and spreading the word about the studio. Just trying to get the name out there and bring in new clients. This is exactly what I have always wanted to do! I am very excited. I can't wait for this to start happening. This was a very exciting week for me.

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 11

This week went very smooth.  I was working with the marketing team while trying to finish time sensitive material for the education department.  A long standing musician with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is having his fair-well concert this coming week.  The SPCO does a great job of honoring them at their last performance with us.  I helped put together over 1,700 mini flyers that will be handed out at his performance.

The rest of my time was spent on a large project that I started last week.  I have a big role in setting up Camp SPCO, which is a weekend retreat for adult chamber musicians.  This week was spent finishing the registration form and starting to format the weekends events.  We've all been to events similar to these, but I never really understood what it takes to make it successful.  We're dealing with grants and development, to operations and marketing.  It is going to be a big project, but I'm extremely excited to see the project through.

Next week I will be in New Orleans and not sending out a blog.  Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/4-1-09

Well I was actually fired from my internship today. Not sure how that's possible, however I made it happen....
APRIL FOOLS!!!
No things are going very well. I was given a task today to put together the information binder for all of our volunteers. The information that is included in these binders are, names, table numbers, floor plans, contact information for anyone that we may need to get in touch with the day of the event. I have also been working with my college in purchasing a table for the event. This is absolutely wonderful that this is possible and that my school will be able to get their name to more people in Los Angeles that may not have heard of McNally Smith yet. Also with that, with this happening it could open up other possible intern positions for future students.

To become more organized I purchased a blackberry phone and it has already come in great use. I can tell that this was a good buy for me in keeping myself and my career organized. I can not wait to use it more, and today I got much more of an idea on what the event will be like. I'm very excited to take place in such a wonderful event and to make the most of my time here.

Tanya Heltemes - Urban Network - Week 10

Another week that flew right by. I guess that happens when you're busy huh? I finally got all the bios organized and filed away, which took longer than I thought would, though considering all my other duties, it wasn't that bad. As time has gone by, and my work has spoken for itself, it's given them an opportunity to give me more responsibilities around the office. I no longer submit news in to someone else (and I also get news articles sent to me to revise), I just post it directly to the server which then goes to the website. It cuts out the middleman and saves them a lot of time. On Friday I was given the task of finding places to do cold calling/sales to get promotional items for bags and/or exhibitor booths at the upcoming conference in June in Memphis. That's scary for me since I've never done anything like that before, though I have worked retail in the past, but I'm definitely up to the challenge. I'm excited to see what I can come up with to bring to the conference and help them out as best I can.

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 10

I can't believe it is the tenth week of my internship with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.  It have gone by extremely fast.  I feel that I have learned and gained many skills here.

This week I started working on a big project.  Camp SPCO is a weekend retreat for adult musicians around the twin cities.  This is their fourth year doing the camp and they have big expectations.  I spent this week researching the documents of past camps to find what I liked and didn't like about them.  The SPCO is giving me a lot of responsibility with this project.  I started on the camp enrollment documents and contracts for instructors and adults attending the camp.  This is where I'll be picking up this week.  Hopefully everything will go smoothly.

Until next week,

Jeremy Horvath

John Lauritsen - Caroline Distribution - Week 5 & 6

So ends two more weeks here at Caroline. The days have been flying by recently. Everybody has been keeping me busy with SoundScan reports, making sure labels get their one sheets in on time, and updating different marketing options for different stores on our B2B.

I just started working at American Eagle on Broadway in Soho. It's great to have something to do at night and on weekends.

Over the last few weeks, the office has seen some big names come in for meetings. Last week Ice T came in with his wife. He's a very nice guy, even though he plays a hard ass on Law & Order. Now today, I had the privilege of meeting Damon Dash.

That's all for now. See you next week.

3/30/09

The grind does'nt stop!

Things are getting bigger and better for me and the team(The Vill)

We have a definite show coming up at the end of the month in Ithica, NY.

The streets are responding well to the projects we've released. So that's opening up more doors. We're starting to work with different artists, producers, and engineers this summer.

Def Jam... I'm still excited being here, you never know what could happen.
An artists by the name of Utada had a listening party last week. She's a very tallanted artist. She's called 'the Maraiah Carey of Japan'.

Enough talk about the fun stuff...

The work I'm doing has been consistant. Iv'e been doing the same things like answering phones, making reservations, mailing out packages, inventory, and dealing with some of the designs.

It's a great learning experience. I ask a lot of questions and do a lot of networking...

Jesse Volk - Pangaea Entertainment Group - Week 11

Hi!

I have much to share this week. Long hours is the theme of my internship so far and with that comes great new experiences...

I've had a chance to learn about producing as well as sit in on the taping of our radio show, Passport Approved, and even had my name mentioned on air for my playlist pick of Florence and The Machine. Thanks Sat!

One of the coolest things about my time here is all of the great new music I've been exposed to which has even reignited my passion for discovering new stuff. And to top it off, we are working with a lot of cool artists right now that you might be hearing from in the not so distant future.

I've also got a chance to help set up and promote a few shows for some of our clients including a pretty sweet showcase of all New Zealand bands at the famous Viper Room. I have to say that going to shows to see new bands and meet new people has definitely been some of my most enjoyable experiences here so far.

Ahh...MUSEXPO! Four weeks to go so it's for sure crunch time. I have to say that it is really unbelievable how our small humble staff puts on huge reputable events like MUSEXPO. It really should'nt be possible!

good and well,

Jesse

MIKE SWOOP-AEMG-WEEK 10

Greetings,

Things have been pretty mild for me at AEMG for the past week or so.  With patience and continuous effort, I've had more opportunities to make my experience what I want it to be.  Still plenty of data entry to be done, but there is still room for learning other areas of the business, especially in terms of all the different licenses the music library, Opus One has authority to issue. In addition to time spent on data entry and CD reproduction for the library and shipments to various sub-publishers, I've had a couple chances to sit in on a few recording sessions with one of the lead composers of Music Group-a very informative experience.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I'll be more in touch this week.

.PEACE.

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 10

This week it was catch up time from Phil and Melanie previously being away for the SXSW Festival. We did a lot of restocking of studio and office supplies and as well as other things to get back in the Swing (forgive the pun) of normal business. Sadly though Phil and Melanie brought us sickness from Texas and by the end of the week I had it. I'm finally getting back to my usual self just in time for this next week. Can't wait.

Ted Smith - Lorie Line Music - Week 7/8

Well all apologies for forgetting to post last week!

I currently have a couple weeks off before we head off to the West Coast. I have been spending this time working on my final project and school work. As far as Lorie Line goes, lately all I've done was submit the board mix for their review and talk about preparations for the next leg. Well, until next time folks!

~Ted

Paul Marshall- Warner Music Group- Week 11

After a brief spring break, I've gone back to work at Warner Music Group.

This week, Warner is rolling out a new program called Play MPE. It's allowing us to send our music to our licensing clients without a physical product, and the shipping costs attached. That's right: Digital. I thought that our clients would be more hesitant to such a huge change. It doesn't feed into Itunes or Windows Media Player, it functions as it's own stand alone player. And! It only plays less than 2 minutes of a song.

I keep on trucking every week that goes by. I'm recieving new releases, distributing them to clients, ordering cds for clients, and giving my input on pitches to clients. That is the most enjoyable part. We're currently working on the new Clint Eastwood film; Mandela. A story set in Southern Africa, the music needs to reflect the Southern Africa sound, both present and past. I discovered a lot of great music from South Africa working on this project. Amadou & Mariam is amazing. I also found field recordings that a guy did all over the world in the 1960s with a tape recorder. Seriously amazing sounding material. He recorded remote villages on all continents, from Amazon drum circles to Zimbabwe vocal chants in the wind to Bali bird hunting songs.

California is a great place. With less than a month left, there's a lot to be done. I'm in the constant struggle to make it to anywhere before the sun goes down. But, more important than getting a tan is networking.

See you soon.

Trevor Weitzel - Universal MPLS

Wow! This week absolutely flew by. Just one week closer to graduation. I honestly cannot wait. Nothing too exciting happened here this week. It was pretty much the usual routine. Next week should be cool though. I get to go to Best Buy Corporate again because Asher Roth is in town and will be promoting his upcoming album. He seems like a pretty funny dude so I can't wait to me him. Gotta love white rappers!!!

Oh and for whoever reads this, mark you calendars for April 13th. I'm going to be holding a Listening Party in the cafe at 5 PM. I'll basically be letting people listen to new music that will be coming out on the Universal Label and also showing videos and whatnot. Plus, as incentive, I'll be giving away free CD's to those who show up.

Darren Vermaas - Dark Horse Studios - Week 6/7

Well it seems my blog is behind once again, but I am here to update all of the eager readers.  The reason for the delay I'll blame on Spring break, since there was nothing happening clearly there was nothing to post about.  Pre-break was worth mentioning though, so here we go.

I was asked by the staff engineer at Dark Horse to assist once again, which I accepted without hesitation.  Once again the project was produced by Dave Bechtel and the artist was named Leroy who spends his life in Afghanistan working.  The project went on for 4 days, each of which was at least 14 hours.  This was another good experience getting to watch the flow of things and working with some of Nashville's best session players.  It's a bit odd walking through the Nashville airport and seeing the McPherson signature guitar and then realizing you were working with the actual McPherson the four days before.  The highlights were probably watching the session players make something out of nothing, and watching how vocals stacked up into something big and impressive.  Also, Tympani mic techniques.

Aside from this project I had been sitting in with a band from CT called Bronze Radio Return.  I did a lot of the set up for this project as well as a bit of patching for them here and there.  When they arrived I offered up my 53 Fender Deluxe amp which they ended up using on quite a few of their songs.  Their myspace has a few videos from their two weeks in studio that are worth looking at.  There album will definitely be worth picking up when it's done.

www.myspace.com/bronzeradioreturn

This week we put in a new Argosy desk for the new C24 console that was purchased and we are all getting our hands on the new Pro Tools 8. Reliant K was in the studio for three days as well.  Good times.  Time to get back to work.

Tyler Jones (Rhino) Week 10 (Part 1)

Hello all,

I trust that everyone that is reading my blogs has been enjoying themselves. I know I am still getting used to the blogging side of life.

Well, first off this week has been great. I just started working on the Grassroots outreach for the new Grateful Dead- To Terrapin '77 and the Winterland : The Complete Recordings ' 73. The Winterland box was an exclusive dead.net release but this is the first time available to retail stores.

I will try and break down what my job is with this release. I receive an email containing the title, the artist, press release, artwork, artists website links, release date, and the "listening party" links.

These links like this one, http://www.dead.net/to-terrapin-listening-party are a link to streaming audio, a limited run preview promotional item. A sneak preview of the album, in the case of the Grateful Dead a 3 discs (To Terrapin) or 9 discs (Winterland).

I take this material, compile it to make sense, then write my pitch and initial "hello" email. This I send to each individual site contact that is part of our 'Grassroots Database'.

The Grassroots is ground floor member of the Marketing Dept. We don't go for the rollingstone.com or billboard.coms', we target the more independently run websites.

I have a lot of fun with this, I find new sites to outreach to as well as find articles and hear about new albums from new artists.

Among my days doing this, I also, as I have mentioned in other blogs, continue to manage content for Rhinos Twitter accounts. www.twitter.com/Rhino_Ent which now has over 600 followers and www.twitter.com/damnfineday . Check them out and become followers, learn interesting musical and historical facts, birthdays, Trivia, and any breaking Rhino News.

Hope you received a better incite into my world at Rhino, and I am sorry if it has taken this long. Sometimes I do a lot that it is hard to explain lol. Enjoy and see you later this week for PART 2 dundunduunnnn...

Till next time America...

Oh yeah check out the new single from Heaven And Hell ( aka Dio Black Sabbath) www.myspace.com/heavenandhellmusic

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 9

This week was pretty low key. A good number of the SPCO staff was on break, so it was very quiet at the office. My main duty was to hunt down a bunch of props for a kid concert coming up. It was fun and very relaxing since it didn't involve a ton of spread sheets or anything. Other than that, my time was spent on a long term research project.

Next week I'm meeting with the artistic director to learn more about the organization. I have a lot of questions for him about his job and how it relates to the overall operations. He is the go to guy for many departments. It seems like everyone from operations to development gets his word on most things. I hope it will be a valuable learining experiene.

Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/3-23-09

Well we have certainly started to get busier around the office. Phone is starting to ring off the hook! Just like they said it would.
We came across a rather difficult problem on Friday. We have a machine that will do our postage for us when we mail items, well our scale must have been off, because all 7,000 invitations had the wrong amount on them. So we had to make an arrangement with the post office to make sure not all invites would be sent back to our office. We ended up figuring it out, but boy was that a long day of phone calls.
I did complete a task I was asked to do that is going to benefit the organization. I was asked to make phone calls to various restaurants around the area to request a donation for our raffle. And one of the newest restaurants in the area I got to donate a dinner for two! I had been talking to the manager for quite some time, and she finally called back today to deliver the good news.

This was one of my goals that I wanted to reach and I felt wonderful telling the CEO and other staff members. I look forward to accomplishing more of these goals during my time here.

Tanya Heltemes - Urban Network - Weeks 8 & 9

So as I was reflecting on what to write after the conference last week, the week flew by and I forgot to post. Oh well, now you get two weeks combined in one.

Conference week was crazy. On the days leading up to it, I did some things to help get ready, like create the placards/signs for all the panels/events to be placed outside the rooms so people knew what was going on at a specific time. As for the conference itself (Wed 3/11 - Sat 3/14), I was busy nonstop from the time I woke up til the time I went to bed. My daily duty was working registration which sometimes got interesting and also gave me a chance to interact with just about everyone that came to the conference. The nights were filled with showcases of performances of gospel, WEA (Warner/Elektra/Atlantic) /EMI, and of course the Berry Gordy event. Saturday I think, by far, was the craziest day. I did registration in the morning til noon, then went to the independent showcase to help out however I could. I was off to the side of the stage and in charge of getting the next act backstage, collecting mics and making sure the following act and MC got the correct mics. Halfway through the showcase I wanted to collapse and I knew I still had a long way to go, plus the event later on that night. Which leads me to the Berry Gordy tribute. I have to say that it was definitely my favorite part of the whole week. I had a moment with Smokey Robinson (which I won't go into details here, but if you're interested in the story, let me know), heard some amazing performances, especially one from my youth, Shanice, enjoyed hearing all about the incredible history of Motown, and loved the fact that during Mr. Gordy's speech, he turned it all around on Miller London. I thought that was really special.

The following week was rather short due to getting a bit of a break after the conference, but when I got back in I was given a task to sort through and organize all the press releases and artist bios/photos to be filed away for possible future use. There's a lot... it's quite a task.

I guess that's it for now. Til next time.

Tyler Jones (Rhino) Week 9

Hello again all,

Spring break was great even with a cold was good to get away and see my family.
Now I have been back to work at Rhino for a week and things are moving fast but slow on the release side of things. Not to many new releases compared to usual from what I am told.

Well I must say that the end of March is going to be fun we have two big releases.. Filter The Very Best Things, greatest hits package, and Queensryche 'American Soldier', an album compiled and written about soldiers stories ranging from WWII to now. I am doing the grassroots outreach again for Filter and this time I am deciding who will receive review copies and respond to all the interested websites. Most time in the past I would just forward the emails on and that would be it. This go around it is a lot of fun to get to work and do it on my own, a lot more hands on.

I also have been doing follow up on past release outreach, for Phish and Rod Stewart, I went to all the sites that we contacted and sent materials to. Follow up and see if they posted reviews or contests fro cd or what exactly. It was very rewarding to see what was posted....

Now that a new week is here, there will be continued work with Filter as well as a new album from The Dead - To Terrapin from May, 28 1977.

That takes care of this past week.. Tune in for more to come from Filter, Queensryche, and The Dead next week.

Take care and keep it snappy.

Trevor Weitzel - Universal MPLS

My internet crashed yesterday so I wasn't able to get this blog in quite on time... sorry. It actually was a fairly quiet week at the office. Just a few people moving from cubes to actual offices, man were they excited haha. Someone else got promoted, so I'm really hoping that means that there will be a spot open for me to apply!!! We'll just have to see what happens.

My mentor went to New York last minute so I was actually on my own all week. It was cool though because I was able to catch up on things that I missed while I was out sick the week before. I've really got this stuff down though, almost to the point where I'm becoming too efficient. It's kind of scary.

No celebrity sightings this week. Bummer. Maybe this week...

3/22/09

This week I learned that before anything, every intern has to learn the basics to get to the next level. Ounce you learn the basics as an assistant, you can then be qualified to become an assistant. After working as an assistant you can advance to another department/position.

I was working on an ETA for one of the head people in the creative department. She has to go to Westwood, CA for a photo shoot/ video shoot, so I booked her flight and made hotel/car reservations.

Electric Red(a group signed to The Dreams label) came by, Rick Ross and Chrisette Michele both had listenin parties.

So far working at Def Jam has been a great experience and I'm learning new things everyday.

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 9

This week Jen and I were able to do some catch up work at the studio. With everyone, including every band, in Texas for South by Southwest there was time to do some organizing, filing, and cleaning of the studio. It was a much needed restful week. It was nice to take it a little slow for once but now we're rested and ready for things to pick back up this coming week. Lets see what happens next.

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 8

So this week ended up being very busy in the world of Swing House. Most of the staff was getting ready to leave for the South By Southwest festival in Texas. My job was to help get everything ready for their trip. It was a lot of running around to many different places to buy everything and anything that they need. I just hope there hasn't been anything we didn't think of.

Now as far as the really fun stuff for me. Saturday I was able to meet two artist that I have been a fan of for about 14 years. Twiggy Ramirez and Ginger Fish from Marilyn Manson. They came into the studio to have auditions for a new guitar player. Marilyn Manson himself didn't show, at least while I was there, but I have always wanted to meet these two just as much as Manson. It was great to meet them on a professional basis rather then just being a fan. However I did get to take a picture with them. That made my weekend. :)

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 8

This week was nice and relaxing.  Since it was mid semester break, I didn't have classes and I wasn't in the office.  It was strange having some extra time.  I was able to fix up my resume and work on some good career leads.  Next week I will be back in the office and working on press releases for the upcoming SPCO season.

Since this is most likely my last semester, I have been spending a lot of time getting ready to transition from student into full time career.  I look forward to being able to utilize the lessons I've learned from my internship.  It's great to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Joshua Stoll -Conway Recording Studios- Week 9

I thought I couldn't get any busier at Conway last week, but I was wrong. I was even busier this week. I got to spend all week in the 3 studios setting up for sessions. On Monday, the runner I was working with was pulled in flooring a session and they needed a vocal booth set up so I set one up even though I had only seen this done twice before. But I pulled it off and everything went really well. On Tuesday I found out that the session that was using the vocal booth I set up was being moved over to a different studio so I got to transfer everything from one studio to the next and then help set up for another band coming in on Wednesday. On Wednesday I got to hook up a 192 and help the head tech calibrate it which was a great experience because I have used a lot of 192s and have never been able to get under the hood and set one up like that. Thursday was spent cleaning up after a session that just left and was set back up for another band coming back in on Monday and we were just getting a head start on the set up. On Friday I was filling a mid shift for a runner who need a day off and Friday was pretty slow starting out it was spent mostly taking care of things I wasn't able to complete the rest of the week because of the hectic schedule. When I thought Friday was going to be a breeze at 4:30 someone called in and needed a studio set up ready for a session at 5:00 so me and the other runner set up a studio for a session in a half hour (now I know why they call them runners) and we completed it just in time.

Trevor Weitzel - Universal MPLS

Hey everyone. Sorry it's been a couple weeks since I've blogged, but I have had a busy schedule and sometimes it just slips my mind. I was actually out of this office all last week for spring break, even though I was actually sick all week, so I didn't do anything anyways.

The week before was awesome though. That Friday I got to spend pretty much my entire day with Ron Browz and Busta Rhymes. They are both on tour together and both have albums coming out very soon, so they were in town to promote themselves at Target and Best Buy Corporate offices. It was so cool because I wasn't just there as a spectator. I actually got to talk to them and interact with and ask them questions and whatnot. They were both just really cool guys. And of course I bonded with Busta cuz we're both named Trevor. He loved that. I think what I learned most is to just not be scared to talk to them just because of who they are. I know once I spoke up they respected me treated me like I was one of them. Couldn't have asked for a better day.

I just wish I could do stuff like that every day!!! Life would be great.

Mike Swoop-AEMG-Week 8

Mike Swoop AEMG-Week 8

Yo Ya'll,

This week has been full of new and very exciting conversation.  I'm finding that when you personalize your experience and participate in dialogue as if it's "your" business, it's much more invigorating as an intern.  The ooh and ahh of being in L.A. has dissolved, however, it's opportunities are clearer.  As an intern for AEMG and the companies involved, I've found that creating meaningful relationships is my sole responsibility, and not a day should go by without my attention to the world of new people, new connections, and new business all at my fingertips.

It should be said,  that in no way should you expect a company to hold your hand through this process.  Do not think of an internship as really anything more than what it is.  An internship is an opportunity to gain WORK experience, which may mean that you spend an entire week (or more) doing not much more than data entry.  But, even as an intern, the value of such work is, as our homegirl Charley would say, "indispensable."  So, if you've been doing some mundane work for awhile, it's time to get creative and show 'em what you're made of, because that's what's is going to make you memorable.

Peace.

Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/ 3-14-09

Following up with my personal goals that I set for myself last week here is the update:

For my first goal of wanting to stay an extra hour at work, well until Friday I was not able to stay at work any longer then usual. Due to the fact that there was no work for me to complete. Not that I did not have things to do all day, I was just not able to put any further work in. However Friday some tasks I was waiting on to be completed were finished allowing me to work longer.

For my second goal for wanting to bring something great to the Society of Singers, this goal is being accomplished with the help of my fearless leader. Debbie, is going to work with me to get the school (McNally Smith) to purchase a table at the event. Also possibly bringing in some larger names to get more attention to the ELLA.

And for my third goal about wanting to make myself needed to my employers. I have been told almost everyday in one way or another that I am vital to their company. I aid them with things everyday, but lately I have been realizing just how much I actually help. If its a large project or a simple favor, my idea's and work is valued.

I will continue working with my goals as my internship continues and will keep giving updates as they advance.

3/11/09

Things are still flowing at the same pace. Sometimes the workday is fast and sometimes slow. Today I was working on the inventory for a group called Brutha. They just shot a video, so I had to make sure we recieved all of the 35mm film.

We have something called the 'Focous Group'. What the focous Group does is come up with different maketing strategies and promotion and publicity plans for different artists on the label. Also, it's an oppertunity for everyone in the group to network and let evryone know what they are involved in. Last week (3/6/09) was the second meeting i have been to. It's opening a lot of doors for me and giving me skills in a crouded business environment.

Other then life at Def Jam I have a group project coming out soon called The Rennaisance and performances lined up for my band The Village Kamp.

Jesse Volk - Pangaea Entertainment Group - Weeks 7 & 8

Hello All,

The past two weeks have been fast paced with many different things going on all seemingly at once. Last week we moved offices due to construction at our old building and the whole staff chipped in to help move and pack and un-pack boxes all through the weekend so we could be set up and ready for business Monday morning. I must say we did an amazing job! The important lesson learned here is that this is the music business; it's not always just about the music, the little things must get done and you can't be afraid or unwilling to get your hands dirty.

The most exciting thing for me lately has been getting the opportunity to sit in on meetings and conference calls and learn from music business masters such as Sat, Joe, and Monte. These guys are the real deal! I feel like I get so much out of just sitting in and listening and observing in these meetings and calls it makes me want to take part more and more. That's another lesson though, all in itself... This internship is just a taste..

Sunday we had a McNally get together/un-birthday party for Charley Brooks which was great because it gave everyone an opportunity to network a little and talk about everyone's internships. Debbie Sandridge was there too so you know it was great fun!

good,

Jesse

Tanya Heltemes - Urban Network - Week 7

So another crazy, busy week. It's so close to conference time, and with that, comes much more tasks that need to be done. It seems like finally all the pieces are starting to fit together here at the office, with me finding a place and feeling like part of the group. I like being able to make myself useful, and lately, I've been able to do just that. I was given some things to do that they normally wouldn't give to interns: transcribing three interviews, which was tedious and frustrating because I kept rewinding the interviews all the way back to the beginning instead of just a few seconds back; and I edited/revised bios for the independent artists performing at the conference this week. Apparently, this was the first year he (David Mitchell) didn't have to do it, and I was told I did a really great job with it and it took a lot of pressure off him. I also went in on Saturday to help stuff bags for the conference.

It's an amazing thing to know that because of all the effort I'm putting in, I can see the payoff. I'm gaining more responsibilities and they come to me when they need something done because they know I'll get it done. That's the type of person I am, and that's what I hoped I'd be able to show them.

The conference is just 2 days away and... I don't even know what all I'm going to have to talk about next week. But until then.... I'm out.

Ted Smith - Lorie Line Music - Week 6

Well Howdy Y'all!

Sorry, I'm stuck in this Texan-speak for some reason... Oh wait, I have been in Texas for the past several days! We flew in on Thursday and after traffic, driving, and a difficult load-in we got in late and had to haul in order to get set up on time. However, the show went well and was followed by three more shows that got progressively better! Now, I sit on the bus in Las Cruces Nm with another day of riding on the tour bus ahead of us before our show in La Jolla Ca on Wednesday. So, if you're in the La Jolla area on Wednesday you should definitely swing by and see the show! Or, if you hapen to be in Tucson on Friday or Chandler on Saturday you could make those as well! Well, as far as touring life goes, it's rough; long days, sleep for a couple hours, always on your feet, running around... But, tis the life and I am enjoying myself!

Joshua Stoll -Conway Studios- Week 8

This week at Conway was another crazy week and I have been given various tasks that most interns are not held responsible for. As I have mentioned before, I have taken media to other studios, which is a great responsibility because it's not a job that should be taken lightly. This job requires a lot of trust and efficiency. Recently I was pulled into a session setup by an assistant to do a line check and test headphones. The same assistant pulled me in on Tuesday to set up the session quickly and efficiently because scheduling had been changed by a client, therefore, there was little time to get everything set up. I was immediately available to help in this situation, I dropped the less important task I was doing to fulfill a much needed task. On Thursday another assistant asked me to zero the SSL in Studio B during a tear down. Next week I will be filling in a runner's shift which is a real shift and not just an intern shift. Realizing that I have been getting noticed for the effort I have put in these last eight weeks has given me a boost of enthusiasm in my daily life as an intern. Knowing that the assistants and Serene know they can depend on me when they need something done is truly a privilege and I hope to continue to build this rapport with them.

John Lauritsen - Caroline Distribution - Week 3 & 4

Sorry about last week everyone, I've been extremely busy and wasn't able to post. I'll make up for it by re-capping the last two weeks. I've finally started doing more around the office. For a while it was pretty slow.

My week started off with emailing record labels that hadn't gotten their bands one sheets into us yet. The usual response is, "oh yeah, I'll get that to you right away", LIARS!! Their constantly missing their deadlines which makes our job much more difficult.

Every Thursday, I'm given the task of sending sales sheets to Soundscan so the bands know how many albums their selling throughout the country. We get sheets from every show the bands play telling us the name and address of the venue, how many albums were sold, and for how much.

Last Friday I put together ten promo packages to send to record stores. Meaning, I get ten copies of each album we need to send out, put them in an envelope, put on the shipping address, and mail them off.

Something else that happened on Friday didn't have anything to do with work but it was cool enough to share. Every once and a while, bands that are working with Caroline, Astralwerks, and Mute will come in and meet with a few people. Usually I never recognize any of them. That was until Friday. I was working as usual when a short bald guy wearing glasses walked in front of my desk. I glanced up, smiled at him and went about my business. About ten seconds after that I started to think that he looked very familiar. I kept trying to figure out why I recognized him but couldn't figure it out. Then it finally hit me. So I typed in the name of who I thought it was into google, and sure enough it was him, Moby. After he came out of his meeting and walked back past my desk I stood up and shook his hand, trying to be as polite and unabtrusive as possible. We exchanged hello's, talked for a few minutes, then he went off to another meeting and I went back to work. It may not sound that exciting but it made my day.

I'm very excited for this coming week because two bands that are managed by me will be joining me in lovely New York for a day. Their on their spring tour and have a show in Harlem on Thursday. I'll be sure to write about it next week.

Well, I think that's about it. Have a great week everybody.

Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/3-8-09

Today myself along with the other interns, all gathered to celebrate our Charley's birthday. At the party I was able to, for the first time, chat with alumni and students about whats really going on. I was able to get their feed back and advice on questions I had been having.

I was able to find out new ways to approach my job that I never even though about. Starting to get more active in the community for example I will be attending a LAWIM(Los Angeles Women In Music) seminar on Wednesday. And I was able to get re-focused on my goals I have for myself out here. Not that I ever lost sight of that, however everyone can always use a refresher. These students have the same goals and dreams as me, and the same drive.
I am one of the hardest working people I know. And being around other people my age that have that same determination is wonderful and all the more encouraging.

This week at my internship I have a list of three things I want to accomplish.
First, I want to put in at least one extra hour of work each day. I believe I should be there the same hours that my boss is.
Second, I want to bring something to the company, whether that be a donation for the event, or a name for one of their committees.
And third, I want to make myself needed. Now this goal can also stretch though out my time there, but I'm going to make sure 100% that my employers KNOW that they NEED me. I believe I have been doing that, at least I believe I have been. But now its time to make sure they know this.

I will write again next Sunday to give a update of my week and how my goals are progressing.

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 7

This week was a very long week at Swing House. I needed to work 6 days this week so we could get caught up on some paper but we finally did it. So now it's up to us to stay on top of things which shouldn't be very hard to do.

On Wednesday, it was a hectic day. There was a production company that came in to shoot a music video for David Cook (American Idol). It was really neat to see the way that a video shoot works from behind the scenes. Plus I was able to sneak out to the craft service table to get a little food. You have to love that.

Phil (the President / owner of Swing House) wants me to start trying to bring in some bands to rehearse at the studios so I started to email some over myspace that have shows coming up in the next month or so. Plus, I'm going to begin going to even more shows then I have been to try to recruit some people. I know, I know it's a rough life! :)

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 7

This week was a busy one.  From midterms to SPCO deadlines, I couldn't find a spare minute.  This is my last semester and midterms went well.  I'm looking forward to the second half of this semester.  There are many plans that will start to come to fruition for me in the following weeks.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra has been busy.  We are signing up patrons and season ticket holders for the new season; the phones have been off the hook.  It's interesting to see that even with tough economic times, many of the SPCO supporters are still willing to give donations and renew their tickets.

Other than that, my time was spent on a long term research project.  Next week I will most likely be out of the office and working on brushing up my resume.  Soon there will be a few new things to add to it.

Ted Smith-Lorie Line Music-Week 5

Greetings again,

Thus brings me to the 5th week of my job with Lorie Line Music. This week is the week that I will be leaving for Texas bright and early on Thursday morning. And, yes, it is midterms week and I thanks all of my teachers for being so incredibly understanding and working with me! Well, this week does not bring too much that's incredibly exciting... I picked up a new KT Square One graphic equalizer for the tour and had to install that earlier today as well as repair the drawer on the audio work box. After I did that and helped load the truck for Texas this week, Tim and I went to their studio to check it out and I am pleased to say that nothing there looked new to me at all. I have no doubts that I would be able to step right up and record a session there. And, for now, off to do something like studying for all these midterms I have to take before I leave.

Until next week,
Ted

Darren Vermaas - Dark Horse Studios - Week 4/5

Well, apparently I forgot to post a blog last week so this will encompass two weeks of intern goodness.  Last week was actually quite busy for me.  I was given my first opportunity as assistant engineer on a project with producer Dave Becthel.  It was a pretty sweet experience, he brought in top notch session players from the area, and I got to watch as an idea went from bare bones to finished product in about an hour.  Both engineering/production students as well as performance students should definitely be up on their charting skills.  I was handed charts and expected to follow along making note of any changes made along the way for the head engineer.  Also, get used to reading bad penmanship.  But aside from charting I was everything from patchbay guy to coffee chef.  The assistant position lasted for 3 days, two for tracking and one for background vocals.  The bgv session was very tedious, but very interesting.  It was really helpful to see how the workflow was done to keep things streamlined and comprehensible.  There were easily 32 extra bgv tracks for each song after stacking and harmonies and more stacking.  Did I mention I was in session for around 15 hours every day?

This week a band from Connecticut called "The Bronze Radio Return" arrived and will be tracking for the next two weeks.  They seem cool, and so far their stuff is sounding awesome.  Trick of the week: Using a plate verb as a room mic.  Awesome.

Joshua Stoll -Conway Studios- Week 7

Well week 7 has already gone by, and I had the opportunity to help set up for a session for a vocal overdub for a television show, and spent a lot of time in the tech shop. Also, other interns at Conway's two months were up, so now I am "senior" intern if you will so it is kind of fun to think about that, haha. On Thursday night I got to sit in with an engineer at the studio and one of the runners who was producing a record and listen to their mixes and just chat for a while. It was a lot of fun to hear some pro-end mixes in the making. Other than that, just a standard week in the 'hood.

Tanya Heltemes - Urban Network - Week 6

What a crazy week it was! It just flew by. I guess that happens when it's busy. I did a few things for some others in the office to help out with the upcoming conference, which is getting ohsoclose now. But the big thing we did this week was... MOVE. That's right, we moved offices. Thankfully we're still on the same floor and just down the hall a bit so all the stuff didn't have to go very far. It's a much smaller office, well it's sorta big, it's just laid out a lot different than the old office. Things will be much cozier now haha.

As days go by and the conference is quickly approaching, I can sense a level of increasing stress and tension to get everything done. I just hope I can help out as best I can to make it a success.

The end. Til next time.

Paul Marshall- Warner Music Group- Week 7

What a week it was.

I was also involved in several pitches for TV & Film. I'm limited to what I can tell you, but I'm waiting for the scene in Transformers II when Bumblebee plays songs on his radio. I also have been reorganizing the music vault. With downtime comes a lot of reading. I'm constantly searching industry magazines looking for opportunities for WMG licensing. It feels good to approach your boss with a lead on something solid. It's great motivation to keep up with industry publications.

I found that it's very helpful to communicate with the creatives and deal-makers in the office, several of our clients WILL NOT license anything. Ever. Regardless. It's frustrating knowing that you have the perfect song for a project, and your artist won't even consider it. Such is business. Deal-makers and creatives are great people to keep in the loop of my pitches, because they have worked with many artists in the past.

I am fortunate enough to be involved in several graphics projects, including Frank Sinatra and Erasure. I enjoy being known as creative.

It's been sultry in the valley the last few days. I'm going home for a few days next week & looking forward to seeing snow, more-so friends and family, but snow too.

Here are my five tracks that I was into this week:
1. Clint Mansell/Kronos Quartet/Mogwai- Tree Of Life!
2. Static X- Sweat Of The Bud
3. Muse- Muscle Museum
4. Amon Tobin- Like Regular Chickens
5. The Chemical Brothers- Do It Again

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 6

This week at Swinghouse there started to feel a little bit more of a daily routine. I'm beginning to know (a little) of what to expect next. But I still know that something completely new can always pop up. I'm starting to make, and take a few more booking confirmation calls which I hope to get a little more use to in the near future.

A little excitement that happened this week (even though I'm not a huge fan of them) was seeing Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Scott Ian (Anthrax), and Puddle Of Mudd (who is in the studio for another week or so, therefore, I will be seeing them a lot).

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 6

This week was spent finishing contracts for CONNECT cultural partners and getting ready to launch the new SPCO season.  CONNECT is an outreach program that sends musicians (cultural partners) to urban schools with the intention of educating children in classical and cultural music. I spent a good amount of time getting contracts ready for this season.  It was very insightful to see how they go about contracting the musicians.

Wednesday I went to a Minneapolis elementary school with a viola player for a CONNECT visit.  It was interesting to say the least.  The music was great; she played three pieces on the viola and took questions.  The kids enjoyed the experience and were excited to learn more.  At the end of the first visit a little girl ran up to her teacher with her hands over her mouth, I knew this was a bad sign.  A second later, she lost her lunch.  I've never seen a school visit end in that manner.  The little girl was fine and the incident was soon forgotten.

Everything is going smooth with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.  So far its been a great learning experience.  Time is flying by!

Tyler Jones (Rhino) Week 7....

Well the week is not over yet but all most and I am having alot of fun at Rhino.... I am now known as T2, due to there is another Tyler working with in the marketing dept. I have been called worse and I don't mind at all.

I am sure you have been waiting patiently for the news on the new release coming out March 10th from Rhino.... Rod Stewart Unplugged..And Seat CD/DVD... Yep Rod on MTVs Unplugged in '93... If any of the older McNally's remeber a song that was done in a class called Contemp Lit.. You know that class that plays in the Cafe'. Well a song from Rod Stewarts MTV performance and following album was "Have I Told You Latley That I Love You". Oh how I had to play that song over and over learning it for class and then here it is on this release years later.

The outreach for Rod is the same as Phish and Graham Nash, emails lots of emails, building the database of possible publishers and review contacts... Not all releases are done like this though. For some of the bigger touring bands like Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, or Foreigner, thats right Foreighner oh yeah!! Cause it feels like the first time.... An out side company is hired to do the outreach, they usually have a bigger base to contact.

Anyway it has been a great week and I look forward to watching some Rod Stewart unplugged this weekend.. Hey its the first time the concert has been on DVD or released period!
Have a great weekend and have a great time......

Tyler Jones (Rhino) Week 6

Hello all,

Well I must say I apologize for missing my Week 6 update to you all. After the long weekend of Presidents Day I was gearing up to go back to work when BAM!! I was sick all night!!!! Some 24hour bug layed me out and it took me a few days to finally get back to what could be considered normal. Once I was somewhat back together again the week was alomst over.

With in that week I continued to do grassroots outreach to various sites for our Phish Boxed set campaing found here...http://www.amazon.com/Clifford-Ball-7-DVD/dp/B001PMICH0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1235692495&sr=8-1
Yep its actually very cool I have seen clips and listen to pry an hour of music from it its so good. I have not opened my copy yet soon though.
If you rember my mention last time about the Vampire Love Songs CD well the promo for that is over being as it kinda flopped but it was a very small idea that was put together. A cool thing that I did find out about it though. I was pretty much the whole outreach team for an all digital release. Once it was put on iTunes and Amazon I was the one that put the bugs in people ears.
Between those releases and continuing my work on establishing the Rhino Twitter presence that was the week www.twitter.com/Rhino_Ent ... More to come with another new release from Rhino.... I start outreach for none other than Rod Stewart..

Till next week America stay snappy.

Week 4 at DefJam Recordings

What a week iv'e had... Last night (2/25/09) I went to The Dream concert at BB Kings. One of the perks working at Def Jam is free concert tickets. So far this is the third show I have been too. The other artists I have seen are Ludo and Razor Light. I'm having a really good time interning here. Today (2/26/09) Iv'e been working with new music videos coming out. What i had to do is make beta copies and dvds of The Dream- Rockin' That Thang Remix. During my second week I got to make a trip over to MTV and Fox to deliver tapes.

DefJam has a very vibrant atmosphere. Mercury Records is in the same building so I get to experience business in Hip-Hop, RnB and Rock. I'm working in the creative department, not only working with the artwork&design but, finance, video, and marketing also.

Anything could happen around here, I'll keep everyone poasted.

Kristen Oelke/Society of Singer/ 2-25-09

I am Kristen Oelke, a Music Business Major that is currently enjoying the Spring semester of 09' in beautiful Los Angeles California.

I am working for a nonprofit charity called Society of Singers (SOS). Their main objective is to help singers who are in financial need. This includes singers subject to natural disasters (Katrina), singers subject to the effects of the recession, and also scholarship programs for singers exploring their Masters Degree in performing arts.

SOS has an annual fundraising event called The ELLA Award. This event honors a specific artist each year. Some examples of artists that have been honored are, Celine Dion, Gladys Knight, Andy Williams, Elton John, Barry Manilow, Julie Andrews, Frank Sinatra and several others. This year SOS is honoring Herb Alpert (from Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass). This is where I come in to lend my assistance.

My tasks while working for SOS include a variety of things. I keep records of the membership programs SOS offers, I order products needed for the ELLA, I am working closely with individuals from several companies to work on getting a donation of their product for the ELLA raffle. I answer the phones and field those calls to who ever can best help them (or I help them myself). I file the RSVP tickets guests send in for the ELLA, I put press kits together, I use Excel to create the graphs and charts used at Board Meetings, and I am the assistant to the CEO of SOS.

What I am gaining from this experience is, how a nonprofit organization works, how to organize a fundraising event (special event planning), sharpening my communication skills, and networking with these wonderful people who have been in the business for years.

I am really enjoying this experience and I look forward to what is to come as the event gets closer. With everyday that I am there it gets more interesting, exciting, and knowledgeable.

Mike Swoop-AEMG-Week 7

w'dup w'dup!

I'm sick with Strep right now.  Missed yesterdays work day as a result. Tried to go in today but couldn't stay, (my boss insisted I stay home for the day).  Things @ AEMG have been getting busier and busier as the weeks go on.  My apologies for the lack of blogging on my part.

Lately, I've been creating cue sheets for shows we've done music for as back-up documentation for royalties.  I've also been doing a great deal of filing/file management for up and coming business within the company.  And with regular shifts of 9 to 6 every day, I was able gain some additional experience with the night guys who edit, mix, cut dialog, and work the machine room for Media City Sound.

Overall things are good.

Keep it hot.

Ted Smith-Lorie Line Music-Week 4

Hey All!

Well, I have returned from my first leg of the tour to Florida and absolutely loved having the opportunity to visit Florida! I had a blast running around that great state and enjoying 70's when it was below freezing here in Minnesota! The shows all went well; although, the first one I will admit to having a couple issues that I had to work out throughout the night. However, the remaining four went well and I just had to work on getting all my cues down perfectly. All of the shows were vastly different from each other; from a tiny stage with chairs on the floor to a historic theater with a balcony (this was my favorite aesthetically but not really great for amplified concerts). During this portion of the tour we got to demo a couple microphones and compare them and decide which one works best with our tour. Also, I had some of my personal gear that I just bought and was able to work with on the tour. I purchased an Earthworks reference microphone and was able to use that and Smaart (which I am currently demoing) to tune the PA to every room each night (the tuning of the PA extremely different each night due to the characteristics of each room). Also, I was able to bring my ProTools (MBox2 Pro) rig along with me to record a 2-track board mix of the show each night as a reference to see where I was at with my mixes. All-in-all this first leg was a great opportunity to work out the kinks in the show and demo and utilize some new equipment. Oh, and it was not a bad chance to get a little tan and relax on the beach for the one hour of down time I had all tour. Oh, and can't forget, I got to meet Hoagy Carmichael's son after our last show (the irony of this tidbit is that we play Hoagy's Stardust!).

Until next time!
Ted

Joshua Stoll -Conway Studios- Week 6

O hey again....
This is week six here at Conway Recording Studio. This week I got to go over to the Fox Film Lot to drop off a hard drive for a movie that is getting mixed. I walked in to the Newman Scoring Stage and saw the biggest studio I had ever seen, and when I was there I ran into Ed Cherney. On Friday night I was able to learn my way around the SSl XL 9080K after the studio slowed down and the cleaning was finished. Other than that, just keeping up with the duties.

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 5

This week was full of lots of little projects.  My time was spent chasing down old SPCO album covers for the new book that is coming out this spring.  The book is the last 5o years with the SPCO.  They have been spending a lot of time with it lately since the deadline is approaching.  We just received the new cover and it looks great.

I also spent time with the education department this week.  I've really enjoyed working with them.  Community education has always been an important part of the SPCO.  I feel that I fit in well with the educational side of things.  I've been teaching at Chaska Music Studios since 2004 and those experiences have been a tremendous help.  The SPCO's goals are much different, but they share a common thread that has given me insight that has been helpful.  I could see myself fitting into a position similar to the educational manager here.

Until next week,

Jeremy Horvath
Music Busniness

Paul Marshall- Warner Music Group Week 6

This week started off with a hectic Tuesday morning, preparing for a lunch-time Chris Isaak listening session. I filled in for LH- assistant to the TV creative, and also the Film/Trailer creative this week. Talk about hands on. Chris Isaak was amazing, and even more amazing at such a personal level. The event took place at Warner Brothers Records, a really beautiful building with a strange MN feel to it. Log siding, fireplaces, almost rustic. Chris played solo acoustic in front of a series of large windows, and about 30 of us were able to be there. He's been with WB since 1984, and shared many stories of Dean Martin, Irving Azoff and others. Cool dude. Of course he played stuff off his new album & hits like the classic "Wicked Game." By far the coolest experience so far...

This week was chaos at times. I enjoyed it.

The Oscars are today, and Hollywood is crazy. We are all expecting business to pick up exponentially after the oscars are done. This next week I'm filling in for the assistant again, as she's filling in for the Film/trailer creative.

I'm starting my own Volk-esque track report; Here's my top Warner-owned tracks that I can't put down:
1. Chris Isaak- Wicked Game, from Heart Shaped World 1989
2. Justice- Waters Of Nazareth, from A Cross The Universe 2008
3. Dan Auerbach- The Prowl, from Keep It Hid 2009
4. Bill Frisell- White Fang, from Unspeakable 2004
5. Bloc Party- Ares, from Intimacy 2008

So Long!

Tanya Heltemes - Urban Network - Week 5

I've got to admit it is getting intense and stressful around the office now. We're about 2 1/2 weeks away from the conference (March 11-14) and there's lots to be done before then. I just recently found out that they're honoring Berry Gordy, who will be in attendance, on the 14th. How exciting is that going to be? All that Motown history in one man... incredible.

I'm extremely excited about everything that's coming up in the near future. The conference is going to be huge and I can't wait.

The end. Til next time.

Ashley Stafford - Swinghouse - Week 5

It's been over a month and I still love it at Swinghouse!

This week they had me sit in one of their weekly meetings to involve me more in the organization. In the meeting we discussed a few changes that need to be made and policies that need to be updated.

I started to get more task that I will be doing. Along with the Daylog that I started doing last week, I began taking some of the credit card payments from the clients, and Jen (my mentor) started showing me how to make invoices for the bands that are coming in.

Jesse Volk - Pangaea Entertainment Group - Week 6

Hi,

Kate Winslet is the most gorgeous thing on this planet.

Week 6: More hard work at Pangaea this week. The whole crew is starting to gear up for MUSEXPO Los Angeles which takes place April 26-29 in West Hollywood. The London West Hollywood is our hotel for the conference and the artist showcases will be at The Viper Room and the world famous Whiskey A Go-Go. Much preparation is involved with the conference which has a world renowned reputation for being superior; a direct result of the dedication of our staff. Amazing. I'm just estatic to have the opportunity to be a part of it all...

Adios!

Muy mucho,

Jesse

Tanya Heltemes - Urban Network - Week 4

Sorry for the delay all you people out there in Blog Land, unfortunately we didn't have internet for a few days. But now I'm back.

Let's see, it's getting pretty hectic around here now with the conference coming up just under a month - 3 weeks away so we're gearing up and getting ready for that. Coming up with ideas for people to come is hard! (So if you're interested... LET ME KNOW!) We've also had lots of creative sessions/chats which have been really interesting and informative.

That's all for now folks. Til next time.

John Lauritsen - Caroline Distribution - Week 2

Hey everybody,

So ends my second week at Caroline and things have started to pick up a little. I've been entering record store's contact information into an excel grid for record store day. They've also had me calling record stores to make sure they have our product on hand.

In other news, I've been able to keep busy on nights and weekends. I was lucky enough to get into a taping of Late Night With Conan O'brien, which was easily the most exciting thing I've done since I moved out here. I made it out to Central Park for the first time today. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it if it was a little warmer. Other than that, I usually just walk around the city just taking it all in.

One last thing before I go. I was at a bar with my roommate and his girlfriend last night. As I'm standing at the bar, some guy nudges me from behind. At first I was wondering why some dude was touching me, but I soon discovered that it was Garrett Manley, former McNally student and a good friend of mine. It's nice to have a friend out here.

That's all I've got for now. I hope everybody has a wonderful week.

John

Paul Marshall Warner Music Group Week 5

This week was indeed a slower one for me. I spent a day filling in as assistant to the Film & Trailer creative, which was interesting. I will be filling that seat all next week, and welcomed the opportunity to sit-in. I continued to write pitches for new & upcoming releases for clients, many of which needed to be just a few bullet points. That really makes you analyze your subject and be very particular about what you say & how you present it.

Clients are often times extremely particular and are searching for specific materials. My main challenge from day 1 has been that I'm not familiar with WMG's huge database of licensable music. I'm trying to change that a little bit every day. Each day, I go into the vault and take a handful of cds that I'm unfamiliar with. When I get asked to do a pitch for something very specific, I often go to compilation cds. I have discovered many, many great things.

I start shadowing some of my co-workers next week, I'm looking forward to that!

On a more personal level, I have been shopping around town for licensing opportunities for the group that I manage, The Histronic. We were booked several large shows this month & business has grown with leaps and bounds, they are keeping me very busy.

I did get to check out Assscat this weekend, a improv-comedy theatre from the members of Upright Citizens Brigade (Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh, Amy Poehler). It was amazing & is going to be a regular sunday thing for me.

Peace everybody.

Tyler Jones Rhino Week 5 Part 2

Hello all,
As promised part 2...

Well lets continue.. The damn fine day meeting went well that I was invited to attend. I talked a little bit about the tie in between the damn fine day site, it has a song of the day by an artist that is a lesser known track, and streams the songs free. I either tie in with the trivia section or one of the other posting that I do through out the day.
The meeting was on the 5th floor conference room or 5th large as they say which has a 60 inch TV, stereo and all the trimmings as well as a piano. In the center was a huge couch that went around a big coffee table. Very rock star and more relaxed and casual than some of the other conference rooms I have been to meetings in.
The dress code at Rhino is pretty basic, I have been meaning to mention it. It's a no tie and slacks required kind of place, but most people still dress sharp. Nice jeans, and a collared shirt of some kind usually is what I and most other guys wear around.
About to start another week and see what adventures in marketing and new media await. See you next time....

Ted Smith-Lorie Line Music-Week 3

Hello to all,

I'm just checking in before I leave for Florida tomorrow. We are flying out tomorrow afternoon and will be arriving in Florida the night before our first gig. The next day is going to be our show at the Manatee Community College in Bradenton, FL. Then we have a show every day following until Sunday, the last day of the tour. This means a show every single night and a lot of work and little time to enjoy the beautiful weather. But, that's quite alright with me. I won't be in MN where it's supposed to be in the 20s, I'll be in Florida in shorts! Well, I have got some last minute details to attend to, wish me luck and I wish all of you could be there with me!

If you are in FL this week, maybe you could be! The shows are:

2/18-Manatee Community College, Bradenton
2/19-Fould's Theatre, Fort Myers
2/20-Edison College, Naples
2/21-Historic Athens Theatre, DeLand
2/22-Largo Cultural Center, Largo

Jeremy Horvath-SPCO-Week 4

This week was a busy one.  There were many different projects going on and I had a hand in many of them.  I finished up my research project on local community education programs that the SPCO will be reaching out to.  It was strange to finish my part of the project and hand it off to someone else.  I'm use to seeing things through to the end.  It was hard to let go of an unfinished project.

This week I also took part in updating data in a software program that is vital to the SCPO.  The Patron's Edge is a program that we use to sample many different kinds data.  We can project sales for the upcoming season or compare passed events with future ones.  It was very interesting to see how they use this software.  Everyone from ticketing to operations uses it in their own way.  It is an important tool for this organization and I'm glad I'm starting to understand it's uses.  This will be a huge help in learning how a big organization like the SPCO runs so smoothly.
