I am Kristen Oelke, a Music Business Major that is currently enjoying the Spring semester of 09' in beautiful Los Angeles California.
I am working for a nonprofit charity called Society of Singers (SOS). Their main objective is to help singers who are in financial need. This includes singers subject to natural disasters (Katrina), singers subject to the effects of the recession, and also scholarship programs for singers exploring their Masters Degree in performing arts.
SOS has an annual fundraising event called The ELLA Award. This event honors a specific artist each year. Some examples of artists that have been honored are, Celine Dion, Gladys Knight, Andy Williams, Elton John, Barry Manilow, Julie Andrews, Frank Sinatra and several others. This year SOS is honoring Herb Alpert (from Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass). This is where I come in to lend my assistance.
My tasks while working for SOS include a variety of things. I keep records of the membership programs SOS offers, I order products needed for the ELLA, I am working closely with individuals from several companies to work on getting a donation of their product for the ELLA raffle. I answer the phones and field those calls to who ever can best help them (or I help them myself). I file the RSVP tickets guests send in for the ELLA, I put press kits together, I use Excel to create the graphs and charts used at Board Meetings, and I am the assistant to the CEO of SOS.
What I am gaining from this experience is, how a nonprofit organization works, how to organize a fundraising event (special event planning), sharpening my communication skills, and networking with these wonderful people who have been in the business for years.
I am really enjoying this experience and I look forward to what is to come as the event gets closer. With everyday that I am there it gets more interesting, exciting, and knowledgeable.
