I stopped at Conway the Friday before I started my internship to check out the grounds and get my schedule. The studio really blew my mind! I walked through the front gate and could already see why it is a world-class studio. The whole complex is set up like a fancy hotel; everything is spotless and set up flawlessly. All the staff is amazing, very friendly, and knowledgeable in each of their fields. After seeing this, I couldn’t wait to get back and start on Monday.
The first two days I was there, I spent most of my time following the head runner at the studio. Now I know how and what to do to keep the studio in phenomenal shape like it was when I walked in for the first time. An example of this that really popped out at me was that every pencil cup had to have 2 black pens, 2 blue pens, 2 pencils and the paper holder sitting next to it has to have the paper always flush with to the top with a pencil on top of that. If any of that is missing, it has to be replaced immediately. The other thing that made me go "wow" was the fact that the toilet paper needs to be folded into a triangle.
The rest of the week pretty much consisted of the same things and they slowly let me off on my own. By the end of the week, I was doing runs on my own and taking care of a lot of little details. I also got to help set up a vocal booth for a session and help clean the consoles. That experience was pretty awesome because I got to see the set up and gear which is just amazing.
